Bespoke Oak & Steel Staircase
Shenfield, Essex
The original staircase — before works commenced The client had recently purchased a four-bedroom detached home in Shenfield and wanted to replace the builder-grade pine staircase with something that made a real statement. The brief called for an open-tread design in solid oak, a fabricated steel stringer to replace the traditional closed string, and a full-height frameless glass balustrade — all within a hallway that was simultaneously being redecorated and re-floored.
Glass panels being fitted to the steel posts The existing staircase was carefully removed and the structural openings checked for load transfer. Our fabrication partner produced a powder-coated steel stringer to the precise dimensions agreed in the design drawings. The stringer was craned in through the front door and fixed to the existing floor structure with resin-anchored fixings. The geometry was checked at every stage with a digital level to ensure the treads would land perfectly.
Oak treads fitted — open risers with steel stringer Solid engineered oak treads — 40mm thick with a softened front nosing — were fitted to the steel stringer with concealed fixings, giving the finished staircase a clean, furniture-quality appearance. Each tread was individually scribed to the wall and fitted flush. Open risers maintain the light, airy feel the client wanted while the underside of the staircase was lined in matching oak veneer panel.
Finished — carpet runner fitted, ready for handover Toughened frameless glass panels were installed into steel channel base shoes fixed to the floor and landing. The continuous top handrail in brushed stainless was cut and bent to follow the staircase rake exactly. Once the balustrade was complete, our decorating team skimmed and painted the hallway, fitted new oak engineered flooring to the ground floor and landing, and the whole project was handed over in a single day.

The staircase is the first thing every visitor comments on. Claremont designed it with us, managed the fabrication and installed it beautifully. It's a piece of craftsmanship we'll enjoy every single day.
